Abbey of Orval
The genesis of a legend

Visit the Abbey of Orval in the Ardennes

The Orval Abbey is one of the most famous abbeys in the Belgian Ardennes. Its history dates back to 1070, when some Italian Benedictines settled in an uninhabited valley. Soon the abbey grew into an important Christian stronghold.

Over the centuries, the abbey was destroyed several times, but rebuilt each time. The last major revival occurred in 1926, when the Cistercian monks of Sept-Fons (France) revived the ruins destroyed by the French Revolution. To finance the reconstruction, they started a brewery and a cheese factory, which are still in operation today.

The ruins and the Mathilde spring

A visit to the ruins of Orval Abbey reveals a place full of history and extraordinary beauty. The abbey is located in a quiet valley where the famous Mathilde Spring rises, a place that adds extra mystique to the property.

World-famous Trappist beer

The Orval brewery enjoys international fame. The unique Orval Trappist beer is brewed on site and is known for its distinct flavor. The accompanying Orval cheese is also worth a tasting.
