The mines of Blegny
Descend as deep as 60 meters!

Discover an authentic coal mine

Between Liege and Maastricht lies the Blegny coal mine, one of four authentic coal mines in Europe where visitors still have access to the underground galleries. A unique opportunity to experience the fascinating world of mining up close.

A descent into the past

Step into the elevator car and descend 60 meters underground. There you will discover the dark, impressive corridors where the "cowpeas" used to work. During the tour, you will learn all about the use of the machines, the underground equipment and the hard life of the miners - their joys, worries and fears.

From coal to power

After the descent, you visit the above-ground facilities where the coal was sorted, washed and transported. You will see how the supply wagons, screens, loading hoppers and washing plants functioned - a fascinating glimpse into Wallonia's industrial past.

Recognized World Heritage Site

Since July 2012, the Blegny mine has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A visit to this site is not only a step back in time, but also a tribute to the hard work and history of the region.
