Down in the valley lies ancient Colmars, officially Colmars-les-Alpes, a fortified town that ranks among the most beautiful villages in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Surrounded by sturdy city walls, watchtowers and two historic forts, Colmars seems to come straight out of another era.
A medieval town among the mountains
Colmars immediately surprises by its character:
narrow streets with stone facades, squares with fountains, wooden shutters in soft tones and inviting terraces where mountain hikers perch. The atmosphere is authentic, quiet and welcoming - exactly as a mountain village should be.
The town is dominated by two forts that overlook the village. Built by Vauban, Louis XIV's famous military architect, they give Colmars its unique silhouette. Walking through the town, you can feel the history in every stone.
Alpine adventure on your doorstep
Countless hikes depart from Haute Clignon and Colmars, including routes along mountain lakes, through larch forests and to panoramic points overlooking the Vallée du Verdon.
In summer, enjoy clear blue skies, fresh rivers and fragrant alpine meadows.
A place to breathe, slow down and enjoy yourself
Whether you are strolling through Colmars, hiking along its slopes or simply sitting on the terrace overlooking the mountains, this region invites you to slow down and let go of everything for a while. Haute Clignon and Colmars are a perfect combination of nature, culture and that wonderful feeling of being "away from the world."
