The Serra de Bèrnia forms the natural border between the Marina Alta and Marina Baixa regions. It is an imposing limestone mountain range with jagged ridges, carved cliffs and vistas that surprise you again and again. The area is part of the protected landscape "Montañas de Bèrnia y Ferrer " - rugged, quiet and purely Mediterranean.
We started our hike from Bancal Llargo, a pleasant starting point in the middle of nature.
Panoramas over Marina Baixa & the Fortress of Bèrnia
Soon the first panoramic view unfolds over Marina Baixa, with Altea, Albir and the coastline towards Benidorm in the distance. Not much later you reach the old Fort de Bèrnia, built in the 16th century by Philip II as a defense against Berber attacks and to control rebellions. Today it has been declared a heritage of cultural importance.
The fortress is located in an exceptional place with panoramic views of:
-
Olla d'Altea
-
Albir
-
Puig Campana
-
Aitana
-
The entire Algar valley
A place where history and nature merge seamlessly.
The path becomes rockier, but remains easily passable. After a delightful stretch of hiking, you will arrive at the highlight of the route: the Forat de Bèrnia.
This is a natural tunnel that runs right through the mountain range. On the south side, a huge cave opening opens up with a spectacular view of the Marina Baixa - one of the most beautiful panoramas of the entire Costa Blanca.
The passage through the Forat is a magical moment: a short, narrow passage where you literally step from one world into another.
A walk to remember
The Serra de Bèrnia - Forat de Bèrnia is one of the most beautiful hikes of the Costa Blanca: rugged nature, history, spectacular views and a unique passage through the mountain range. An absolute must during a stay in Xàbia.
