The savanna of the north
The Hoge Venen nature reserve near Spa is not called the savanna of the north for nothing. You walk through vast plains of grasses and peat, with solitary trees and shrubs growing here and there, giving the landscape an almost unreal, open atmosphere.
Rugged, pure and surprisingly quiet
The High Fens are rugged and impressive, but at the same time a dream for true hikers and nature lovers. The soil here is extremely nutrient-poor and the climate can feel downright arctic. Just because of this, everything grows incredibly slowly. It is the perfect place to deliberately slow down: go on foot, slow down and let in the silence - exactly what visitors experience so strongly here.
An ideal introduction to the bog landscape
If you want to get acquainted with the typical characteristics of the High Fens - open plains, moors, special flora and unprecedented tranquility - then this hike is a great start. Every season has its own character here, from misty mornings to crystal-clear skies and warm shades of heather.
