Hike Chateau Walzin
A human eagle's nest

A castle on a rock above the Lesse River

The Château de Walzin is located in Dréhance, today a borough of Dinant in the province of Namur. This neo-Gothic castle perches on a steep cliff above the right bank of the Lesse, just before the river flows into the Meuse. Its location alone makes it one of the most photogenic panoramas in the region.

Centuries of history in a strategic place

At this strategic point along the Lesse - formerly a ford - a hilltop castle was already spotted in the 11th and 12th centuries. This "eagle's nest" was destroyed from the land four times over the centuries. Yet one element remained standing: the 11th-century keep, which today still bears witness to Walzin's rich past.

Fairytale views along the river

The fairytale Château de Walzin stands proudly atop a steep cliff here, rising almost straight up from the Lesse. Wooded paths and river views alternate during the hike, culminating in that typical moment when the castle suddenly appears among the greenery - a true Ardennes classic.
