Here, in the charming hamlet of Haut-Clignon, time seems to have stood still. Surrounded by forests, mountain pastures and impressive peaks of the Parc du Mercantour, lies La Bergerie - a former shepherd's house built in 1886 that today serves as a cozy, restful mountain hut with a view that is never the same.
From the moment you arrive, you will experience the magic of this special place. The house is located at the end of a narrow gravel path, against the edge of the nature reserve. Behind the house sheep graze, and in front of you stretches the valley of the Verdon. The sun plays the leading role here: due to its high location, you enjoy long, bright days and breathtaking sunsets.
In the morning you can have a leisurely breakfast on the terrace in front of the house while the mountains slowly light up, and in the evening the upstairs balcony is the place for a glass of wine overlooking the valley. Nature is all around you: the whistling of alpine marmots, grazing chamois in the distance and the scent of pine forests wafting through the valley.
A restful mountain hideaway where time, silence and nature come together
Inside, there is warmth and simplicity. The walls and ceilings are lined with melèze wood, which gives the interior a rustic charm. On the first floor you will find a spacious hall with typical mountain decoration and handmade objects from the region. Here you will also find the bathroom with walk-in shower, double sink and toilet - generously sized and freshly finished. Adjacent is a practical storage room with refrigerator, freezer and washing machine, useful for longer stays.
One flight of stairs leads to the kitchen, which is the heart of the house. Authentic and cozy, with a classic AGA wood stove (two hotplates, two ovens) and an additional AGA gas stove with electric oven. The kitchen is further equipped with an electric kettle and coffee maker. Here you don't just cook a meal, you experience cooking - slowly and with attention, as it should be on the mountain.
Adjacent to the kitchen is a spacious bedroom with a comfortable double bed (160 cm wide) and a large wooden closet. The room exudes peace and simplicity - exactly what you are looking for after a day in the mountains.
On the top floor is the cozy living room in wood, with a wood stove in the middle and large windows that frame the view like paintings. At the round dining table you can enjoy breakfast with a view of the Verdon Valley, and in the sitting area you can cozy up by the fire in the evening. Behind a room divider is an additional sleeping area with a double bed; not fully enclosed, but perfect for those who love being cozy together. There is also a second toilet with sink on this floor.
Outside waits a small garden with a wooden table, benches and some deck chairs. It is a simple but lovely place to read, eat or just watch the clouds slowly pass over the mountain peaks. Nature literally starts at your back door: hiking trails start right from the house. From short walks to multi-day treks over the ridges - you can do anything here. With a bit of luck you will encounter ibex, chamois or marmots along the way.
If you do want to visit civilization, the charming town of Colmars-les-Alpes is located down in the valley. Here you can go shopping or settle down on a terrace between the medieval walls of the old fortress.
The house is accessed via a steep, winding gravel path. Upon arrival, we recommend first parking in the small parking lot at the beginning of the village to find out exactly where the house is located. Then you can park your car at the barn next to the house if you wish. Please note that the last part of the road is steep, and larger cars may have trouble with the curve.
La Bergerie is a place for those who love silence, nature and simplicity. No traffic, no crowds - just the mountains, the sun and the fresh air. A unique hideaway where you really get away from it all.
Fantastic location - very nicely decorated - blissful stay on the balcony terrace
La Bergerie is a lovely cozy house with a phenomenal view. We enjoyed it and the surroundings. We did regret that the hiking in the mountains (start around the corner from the house) was not suitable for us as recreational hikers. The trails were narrow and uneven with frequent steep inclines. For experienced mountain hikers it will definitely be recommended.
